Community Engagement
Students in every discipline have the opportunity to enhance their college experience by combining meaningful civic engagement or service learning with academic instruction. Classroom learning is taken into the real world where students complete related service and volunteer projects that fill needs in the community, leading to an enriched learning experience and increased awareness of civic responsibility. Students volunteer, teach, or care for others while being challenged to explore their role in the community.
There are two options for earning academic credit for service learning at the College:
- Civic/Service learning incorporated into a course
Some classes have service initiatives embedded into the class as a requirement or as an alternative assignment. To participate in service learning, a student must register for the course. - Civic/Service learning added to an anchor course
For this option, a student undertakes volunteer work outside the College as a one-credit add-on to an existing anchor course. Students simultaneously register for both the anchor course and the Service Learning course (SLR 101.) Enrolling in this option requires submission of a contract between the student and the course instructor.

The project must be approved by the student's faculty advisor, as well as by the faculty member who will present the project to the appropriate department. An interdisciplinary project may be planned requiring approval from more than one academic department. Projects will be planned and approved in advance.
