Honors Program

The Honors Program at 4Cs provides students with opportunities to enrich their learning experiences. We offer courses, advisement, scholarships, and support dedicated to the academic success of Honors students. Highly motivated students can pursue independent research, collaborate with faculty and fellow Honors students, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare for advancement to Commonwealth Honors Programs.

The 4Cs Honors program is accredited by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is a member of the National Collegiate Honors Council. This state-wide program allows community college students to graduate as Commonwealth Honors Scholars and transfer their honors credits directly into the honors programs at four-year state colleges and universities.

Independent Study

Independent Study is a great opportunity for students to work independently under the guidance of a faculty member. Independent Study accounts for academic study that is not available through established courses. Self-motivated students are able to take advantage of their academic interests and explore a subject matter in greater depth. Participation is subject to approval by your academic advisor as well as the faculty member who will oversee the study.

Online Learning

To provide flexibility and convenience, many of our courses are offered online or have online components. Online education can provide a rich and interactive environment which will allow you to develop good communication skills and use of multimedia. Learning at your own pace allows you to study anywhere, anytime, while you gain real-world web research and communication skills.

Some course instruction at 4Cs is offered fully Online (may require proctored exams on campus), and some courses are Hybrids, which are split between online and in-class instruction. Students may use college computers on campus.

For online courses, the following is required:

Any online instruction requires the use of our Internet-based learning management system, Moodle™. The Office of Online and Blended Learning provides support for students using the Moodle™ system. Depending on the type of class structure, students can access assignments, lectures, discussion forums, and grades.

Service Learning

Students in every discipline have the opportunity to enhance their college experience by combining meaningful civic engagement with academic instruction. Classroom learning is taken into the real world where students complete related service and volunteer projects that fill needs in the community, leading to an enriched learning experience and increased awareness of civic responsibility. Students volunteer, teach, or care for others while being challenged to explore their role in the community.

There are two options for earning academic credit for service learning at the College:

  1. Service learning incorporated into a course
Some classes have service initiatives embedded into the class as a requirement or as an alternative assignment. To participate in service learning, a student must register for the course.
  2. Service learning added to an anchor course
For this option, a student undertakes volunteer work outside the College as a one-credit add-on to an existing anchor course. Students simultaneously register for both the anchor course and the Service Learning course (SLR 101.) Enrolling in this option requires submission of a contract between the student and the course instructor.
